Steelers Ladies are Back!

The Steelers ladies are BACK… after a long season off, the ladies team are returning and preparations are already underway for the upcoming season.

The ladies team was established back in 2016, starting with two training sessions before being thrown in at the deep end and competing in their first ever Nationals tournament. Focus moved away from a ladies only team in 2019 mainly due to a lack of available rink time but for the 2020/21 season the ladies are back with a vengeance.

We are looking for female ball hockey players aged 14+ to get in touch and register for the Steelers ladies team. Our return to training will soon be announced once our home rink re-opens and we want to start with a bang and get the season off to a flying start.

If you are interested in finding out more or putting your name down for a session then please send us an email to – info@steelersballhockey.co.uk. Dont worry if you have never picked up a stick before or anything. We will teach you the basics and even lend you all the gear for the first few sessions.

We are looking for a squad of up to 26 players to make up 2 teams next season. Training sessions will be predominantly on Sunday evenings. (Times tbc)

A few weeks ago the new ladies head coach was announced and this is what Emily had to say regarding the return of the ladies –

I was part of the first ever Steelers ladies team, and I have been watching the Sheffield Steelers ice hockey team all my life. As soon as I heard about a ladies ball hockey I jumped at the opportunity to get involved and I have been amazed at how the Club has grown over the last 4 years .Since joining the Steelers BHC I have been fortunate to represent Great Britain 4 times in the Junior World Championships and my personal goal is to be selected for the Women’s National Team. I believe that all I have achieved would not have been possible without the help of this club, which is why I now want to put my passion for the sport into helping and developing others in building a strong Steelers Ladies team.

If you’re reading this thinking, ‘I wouldn’t have a clue what to do’, do not let that put you off! Most players I have played with, including myself, have started from scratch with no experience, but if you want to try something new then get in touch with the club asap! I can assure you that by playing for the Steelers, you will not only learn and develop your ball hockey skills but you will also grow some great friendships to last you a lifetime.

We would also like to welcome our new family member, congratulations to our own Steelers ladies #31 Jade Thomas and Tom Murray on the birth of their little girl Lila Jessica Murray.

William Durgan

The Sheffield Steelers Ball Hockey Club likes to recognise the achievements of all of our players and we have asked our coaches and our parents to share these achievements via our website.

By sharing these achievements we want to reward and acknowledge the hard work and efforts of all of our players and hope you all enjoy reading about our players successes.

Kicking off this little series of stories is our U10 player William Durgan. Big thank you to Williams mum, Sharon for the following article:

WILLIAM DURGAN aged 9

My little boy William started playing ball hockey for Sheffield Steelers at age 5 and ice hockey for Sheffield Academy at age 6. He has worked his way up through the age groups to where he is now. He started in the under 9’s and played up at age 7 and 8 to Sheffield Thunder 11A’s team last year and the team won 5 lots of silverware including Under 11’s League Champions 2018/19, Ayr Under 11’s Tournament 2018/19, Kingston Tournament 2018/19, U11’s Sheffield Tournament 2018/19 and Nationals Champions 2018/19.

He trialled for Sheffield 11’s at the back end of last year and was offered a place again on Sheffield Thunder 11A’s. He currently trains up to the 13B’s team. William has also been lucky enough to be selected to play in the Christmas Classic on 2 occasions. This is a charity ice hockey game raising much needed funds for the Sheffield Childrens Hospital – Team Woody in 2018 and Team Santa in 2019.

William lives and breathes hockey. He is doing really well along his hockey pathway. He has now been offered to go to Midlands Conference Trials which is an honour in itself to be put forward for. Late nights in Nottingham 11.15pm to 1.15am and finally arriving back home at 2.30 in the morning. Good job we love him!
Following on from this he has been selected to play for the Under 11’s Midlands Conference Team in Dumfries (February 2020) and Tilburg (April 2020).
What an achievement for William!! Well done. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.

Steelers Black Team makes Debut

The new Steelers Black team made its debut at the weekend taking part in the 2nd League meet of the season held at Harvey Hadden in Nottingham.

Althought the team was playing short handed due to the late fixture change they battled hard and gave a good account of themselves.

U10 National Qualifier Winners

The Steelers BHC U10s and U16s took part in the BHUK Autumn Qualifier tournament at Lutterworth last weekend.

The morning was a fantastic event with Steelers, Huskies and the Terriers in action.

The U10s went unbeaten in their games and won the final to become the Autumn Qualifier Champions.

The U16 won all of their games in the group stages but unfortunately lost on penalty shots to the Huskies after a 1-1 draw in the final.

Overall though the event was a big success and all the players had an enjoyable time and the Club would like to thank BHUK for another great tournament.

Behind the Scenes

The close association between the Steelers Ball Hockey Club and the Sheffield Ice Hockey Club gives our younger playing members a number of extra special opportunities.

The most notable being the chance to go behind the scenes and see the teams dressing room and experience the atmosphere of the Arena while watching the teams warm up from the bench.

Last week 15 of the juniors were lucky enough to go behind the scenes for the Steelers v Cardiff Devils, EIHL league meeting.

The tour allows the kids to meet their heroes and also see the Steelers dressing room, training area, jacuzzi/hot tub rehab zone, media room and obviously the players in action on the Ice.

Central Conference Kicks Off

The 10th season of the Central Conference kicks off on Sunday at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.
